Smuth River Tribe

In 1929, Charlotte Hickman, the third woman ordained in the Methodist Church, was posted to the Gushchu Indian Mission in Smith River on the northern coast of California. Discovering that none of the tribe’s history, rituals and folktales had ever been written down, she launched a personal project over the next 16 years to document and record for posterity as much as she could about the “Olden Days.” The details and stories she collected for this unique book came primarily from tribal elders at winter campfires and summer beach meetings.
